Alignment with the BETA Strategy
The continuation of KIEP 250+ will put the government’s BETA strategy central in its approach. Initially, the program focused on helping SMEs weather the COVID-19 crisis. Now, it returns to its initial focus on “value addition” and “innovation,” key components of Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
BETA stands for Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and focuses on several critical areas: Agricultural Transformation; Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs); Housing and Settlement; Healthcare; Digital Superhighway; and the Creative Industry. The government has identified nine value chains for particular growth: leather, cotton, dairy, edible oils, tea, rice, blue economy, natural resources (including minerals), forestry, and building materials.
